Networking Tips & Resources

Social networking sites allow you to easily connect with like-minded career professionals. With over 12,000 HGSE alumni on the platform, LinkedIn is a great resource to explore careers and build your network. LinkedIn also offers a free webinar series on creating profiles and networking.

The Harvard Alumni Association manages a university-wide alumni database so you can connect with Harvard alumni from any Harvard school.

There are many other resources for finding employers and contacts.

  • Use Guidestar to search for nonprofit organizations in your geographic area.  Guidestar is a database of nonprofits searchable by location and purpose and is accessible through the Gutman Library's eResources.

  • Students may contact their undergraduate institution’s alumni network and refer back to mentors, professors, or friends to ask for additional connections.
  • Professional associations, such as the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), are another helpful tool to gather information about your intended field. Most professional associations have reduced student membership fees for current students. Refer to the Associations Directory in the sidebar to identify more relevant groups.

Jobseekers must identify and conduct outreach to organizations independently since there are many more organizations in the market than just those that interact directly with HGSE.  Students also need to find job postings beyond those listed in Hired.

Networking and conducting informational interviews are important ways of gaining contacts in your field, learning about job search leads, identifying organizations, narrowing down career options and getting advice on job searching in the field.
