Ed.L.D. Licensure Requirements
Superintendent Licensure for Ed.L.D. Students
In order to earn your superintendent's license through Ed.L.D., you must:
- Complete all academic and professional program components and graduate with your Ed.L.D.
- Apply in ELAR for your provisional license for Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent
- Apply in ELAR for your initial license for Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent
- Apply in ELAR for the Communication & Literacy MTEL Waiver or pass the test
- Submit to the Licensure Team your Employment Verification Form, on school/district letterhead and signed with a pen by an appropriate administrator
- Submit to the Licensure Team your Practicum Completion Form, confirming your 500 hours of mentored experience in a superintendent practicum
Your provisional license will be awarded as soon as possible after you meet the requirements, even while you are still enrolled at HGSE. You can work as a superintendent in Massachusetts with a provisional license, but only an initial license will transfer to another state through the interstate agreement protocols.
You can not earn your initial license before graduation. The Licensure Team can provide a letter of good standing to support your job search. School administrators are accustomed to working with recent graduates and know there will be a lag between when you become eligible for the license and when you receive it..
Moving to another state?
Plan ahead! Licensure requirements vary by state and additional examinations, coursework, or other requirements may be needed to qualify for licensure outside of Massachusetts. If you anticipate applying for licensure in another state, we encourage you to contact Sami early in the academic year to discuss your plans.
Already licensed in another state?
If you have a superintendent's license already from another state and would like to transfer it to Massachusetts, please schedule an appointment to discuss your options.
